Scones and Dresser

In Friday’s update post I promised to post about some scones I made, so I’m finally getting to that now! It’s been a busy weekend… but, first – the scones!

I found this receipe on the Smitten Kitchen blog and I have reposted it here. It is mostly a verbatim repost but I did modify it slightly after perusing the comments.

Whole Wheat Raspberry Scones

1 cup (120 grams) whole wheat flour
1 cup (125 grams) all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon baking powder, preferably aluminum-free
1/2 cup (50 grams) granulated sugar*
1/2 teaspoon table salt
6 tablespoons (85 grams) cold unsalted butter
2 tbsp vanilla
2 cup (136 grams or 4 3/4 ounces) fresh raspberries
3/4 cup (189 grams) greek yogurt (6 oz)*
1/3 cup (79 ml) heavy cream

* parts that I changed

Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. In the bottom of a large, wide-ish bowl, whisk flours, baking powder, sugar and salt together.

With a pastry blender: Add the butter (no need to chop it first) and use the blender to both cut the butter into the flour mixture until the biggest pieces are the size of small peas. Toss in raspberries and use the blender again to break them into halves and quarter berry sized chunks.

Without a pastry blender: Cut the butter into small pieces with a knife and work the butter into the flour mixture with your fingertips until the mixture resembles a coarse meal. Roughly chop the raspberries on a cutting board and stir them into the butter-flour mixture. (Mine turned very pink by adding the raspberries this early. In my next batch I’ll probably add them later so the dough is more marbley like the photos on Smitten Kitchen’s post.)

Both methods: Add the ricotta and heavy cream together and stir them in to form a dough with a flexible spatula. Using your hands, gently knead dough into an even mass, right in the bottom of the bowl. Don’t fret if the raspberries get muddled and smudge up the dough. This is a pretty thing.

With as few movements as possible, transfer the dough to a well-floured counter, flour the top of the dough and pat it into a 7-inch square about 1-inch tall. With a large knife, divide the dough into 9 even squares. Transfer the scones to prepared baking sheet with a spatula. Bake the scones for about 15 minutes, until lightly golden at the edges. Cool in pan for a minute, then transfer to a cooling rack. It’s best to cool them about halfway before eating them, so they can set a bit more. I know, way to be a big meanie, right?

Do ahead (I took this route so they could be fresh-baked in the morning): Scones are always best the day they are baked. However, if you wish to get a lead on them, you can make them, arrange them on your parchment-lined sheet and freeze them. If you’re prepping just one day in advance, cover the tray with plastic wrap and bake them the day you need them. If you’re preparing them more than one day in advance, once they are frozen, transfer them to a freezer bag or container. Bring them back to a parchment-lined sheet when you’re ready to bake them. No need to defrost the frozen, unbaked scones, just add 2 to 3 minutes to your baking time.

I also added the lemon icing for some more sweetness, because even though I doubled the sugar in the original recipe these scones still weren’t sweet enough for me! This is my own recipe:

Lemon Icing

1 cup powdered sugar
1/2 tablespoon lemon juice
1 tablespoon milk

Adjust the milk-to-powdered sugar ratio to achieve the desired consistency. I wanted more of a glaze than a fluffy frosting so I used a teeny bit more milk. Just stir and stir until the lumps smooth out and it is ready to go!

I’ve been sanding this thing sporadically over the last month or so (this picture was taken after I had sanded half of the drawers). My goal was to get it all painted by this weekend because the baby stuff we’re accumulating needs a home!

It took some serious perseverance and carefully watching of the weather but it all got done. The weather this weekend was so unpredictable. It looked like it was going to rain but aside from an intense thunderstorm on Saturday night we stayed mostly dry. I started painting on Saturday around 2 and brought everything in around 7:30, about 30 minutes before the storm started. Whew!

Anyway, here it is! I added some glass-like pulls that I thought we a bit more girly and, as a last-minute addition, I painted the insides of the drawers hot pink. The pink doesn’t really go with the rest of the color scheme but I think it’s a nice surprise when you open the drawers.

On Sunday I applied a coat of sealer so the paint won’t scratch too easily and I let it sit outside to air out for awhile. As a result of all that work I rested a ton today, taking a nice long nap on the couch and generally neglecting all my duties and other projects. This week I’ll be sewing so hopefully I’ll have a post in a week about more accomplishments!

Friday Update: Week 33

apple-alu-keyboardBaby is 17 inches long this week! The keyboard that came with my iMac is also 17″ long. I’m currently typing this post on my iMac but I usually use my iBook because, well, I like to sit on the sofa and be comfortable. My iBook won’t turn on and that is upsetting! It’s only five years old! Stay with me buddy. Although I would love a new one of these! (Haha NOT going to happen!)

Another week down, only seven more to go! Seven! But I am focusing more on the weekend ahead. I have so much to accomplish – thank goodness I have three days in which to do it!

  • My number one project is finishing up the dresser that I’m refinishing. I’ve been sanding it all down by hand with little strips of sand paper because I’m too cheap to buy even one of those  sander things. I’ve been trying to wrap that up for days but it keeps raining this week so I’m stuck. I can’t sand inside! Then I need to fill all the scratches and dents with wood putty so it looks all smooth and pretty again (I found this dresser on Craig’s List so it’s a little beat up). Then I will paint the whole thing and attach new drawer pulls that are all pretty and girly. Finally a place to put all the clothes and diapers I’ve been accumulating!
  • I also need to finish the giant mobile I’ve been toiling over for weeks. Most of it is installed on the ceiling, I just need to adjust a few things and decide whether or not to make just one more yellow poof like the one I made over Spring Break (which I will try to do but after I finish a plethora of other projects).
  • Then there’s the sewing. Oh so much sewing. I want to make pillows, a cover for our Boppy pillow, covers for the changing pad and a couple sheets.
  • Finally, I found a cute little lamp at a thrift store for three bucks so I’ve got to fix it up and get it in place. Plus install a couple new mirrors to replace the full-length mirror I had to take down in order to get Baby2’s furniture in the right places. Aaand hopefully take pictures of everything so I can write a post about our finished nursery. Don’t hold your breath, my list is daunting!

Not to mention getting in some quality time with family and friends too! My moms group has an outing to the “What to Expect” movie so fingers crossed that people actually show up!

I’m excited for the weekend but I will look back on this week for just a few things:

  • Total weight gain: 26-27 pounds, the scale moves. Not surprising given the below cravings, (lack of) exercise and baby’s own half-pound gain this week!
  • Cravings: Still smoothies, I love them and it is unfortunate that a Jamba Juice is so close to work, but my old boss kept talking about wanting scones the other day and how I should make some (I’m like the team baker) so I did make some this morning and I wanted to eat all of them. I will post pictures later today (no time now!). I’m trying not to go crazy over carbs since my midwife gave me the okay to eat more of them!
  • Coolest symptom: It’s difficult for me to think of something other than baby kicks because she’s moving ALL THE TIME now. But generally I feel great, physically (so I should be exercising, dang it!). I’m sleeping very well provided I’m not woken by my bladder or other interruptions because I have not been able to return to sleep in those cases. I’ve had some extra early mornings at the office because of this.
  • Lamest symptom: I’m plagued by small, annoying things really. These things don’t really bother me all that much so I must remind myself that things could be a lot (a LOT) worse so be grateful. Grateful I tell ya! Still short on space between my belly and boobs, but I’m either getting used to it or it’s suddenly better. The midwife says I’m carrying really low and I was like. “What the hell are you talking about?!” But after looking at my pictures, I know she’s right, baby is pretty low.
  • Exercise this week (the goal is 210 minutes): This week I have nothing, literally no logged exercise time. Total fail two weeks in a row! I spent a lot of the weekend walking around but I’m not counting that. I will be better next week. I WILL!

This week your baby weighs a little over 4 pounds (heft a pineapple) and has passed the 17-inch mark. He or she is rapidly losing that wrinkled, alien look. Your baby’s skeleton is hardening. The bones in the skull aren’t fused together, which allows them to move and slightly overlap. This makes it easier for your baby to fit through the birth canal. (The pressure on the head during birth is so intense that many babies are born with a conehead-like appearance.) These bones don’t entirely fuse until early adulthood, so they can grow as your child’s brain and other tissues expand during infancy and childhood.

Friday Update: Week 31

PhotobucketThis week baby is about 16 inches long which is about the length of a typical Milton Bradley (now Hasbro) board game box, like Sorry, Clue or Battleship. Kiddo1 has quite the game collection, built up over many years of me asking our families for toys that don’t have batteries.

Indigestion is still quite a battle this week, but only if I struggle to control myself! As long as I eat small meals I’m okay, but that’s so much harder than it sounds! I’m so hungry! And when the food tastes so good (as most foods are) I just want to eat the whole thing! Plus seconds! Also, eating small meals means I need to eat more often which is good and bad. Good because I get to eat (that’s always good!) but bad because I have to have food with me pretty much all the time because I never know when my stomach will cry for more.

On Monday, the hunger struck while I was leaving work which was most unfortunate because I had to pick up my son and then probably run some errands or something, I don’t remember because all I could think about was the hunger! We arrived home and I quickly scarfed down some cottage cheese and carrots but I still ended up having odd indigestion-like feelings and had to lie down on the sofa for awhile. WTF? How can I feel all indigestion-y if I haven’t eaten anything?!

On Wednesday I had it down, though. I ate my lunch in thirds at 11:30, 1:30 and 3:30. That way when I left at 4:15 I could make it to pick up Kiddo1 and get all the way home. Then I had to have a snack when we got home and had to eat an early dinner. And some more snacking. If I have to start getting up in the middle of the night I’m going to freak out!

One bad thing about all this indigestion (or reverse indigestion?) that actually leads to good discoveries is all the Braxton Hicks contractions that the discomfort brings on. I had been lying down on my side and breathing through them, which does help a little. But on Monday I decided to kneel on the living room floor instead, with my head up on the sofa seat. To my surprise that worked a whole lot better! A few minutes of that position and the contractions were pretty much gone. Maybe all that stuff I learned from Active Birth is sinking in. Hmmm…

Anyway, let’s go through the weekly wrap-up, shall we?

  • Total weight gain: There’s got to be something wrong with my bathroom scale. It says that I’ve actually lost a pound this week. That can’t be true right? Normally I’d be all like, yay! but one is supposed to gain during pregnancy right? Well, I’m calling it even at 24 pounds gained rather than take a pound away. Baby2 gained half a pound this week!
  • Cravings: I suppose salads, I’ve had five or six this week. Good ones with spinach and other dark greens. I’ve tried to be really good about my carbs lately but I have had some moments of weakness. I can’t help myself!
  • Coolest symptom: This week I had the first experience of “escapism” kicks for this pregnancy. These are the kicks during which a body part protrudes slightly from my belly. I’m not sure what it was, a butt maybe, but something round was sticking out my right side and it was weird and funny. I love these kinds of kicks. I just gave her a little pat and a rub and gently pushed her back a bit. She moved around like crazy for awhile! I hope she isn’t running out of room already!
  • Lamest symptom: When I sit down, my boobs sit on my belly. I’ve got a little boob shelf going on. Also, it’s interesting that when I pass women who I don’t know, they stare at my belly. When I pass men they stare at my boobs (regardless of whether or not they know me). Yes, I am growing people, but I still have a face!
  • Exercise this week (the goal is 210 minutes): 215 minutes! I’m super proud of myself because I also fought a cold this week. I think the working out (combined with the six or seven cups of lemon tea for a couple days!) helped me get over the cold quickly. Also, I did a much better job at getting an even split between cardio and yoga (110 of cardio with water aerobics, biking and the elliptical; 105 of yoga) but I still need to work on getting in exercise on the weekends and I’ve neglected to do my arm routine all week. You win some, you lose some I guess.

Baby2, what’s new with you? Here’s an update, courtesy babycenter.com:

This week, your baby measures over 16 inches long. He or she weighs about 3.3 pounds (try carrying four navel oranges) and is heading into a growth spurt. Your baby can turn his or her head from side to side, and his or her arms, legs, and body are beginning to plump out as needed fat accumulates underneath the skin. Your little one’s kicks and somersaults may be keeping you up at night. Take comfort: All this moving is a sign that your baby is active and healthy.

Friday Update: Week 30

PhotobucketThis week’s baby-to-object comparison takes me back to my architecture school days, as baby is the length of a concrete masonry block: just shy of 16 inches long! These blocks are about 16x8x8 (15-5/8″x7-5/8″x7-5/8″ to be precise). In school I used to measure the height and width of masonry walls by counting the bricks. Everywhere Mr. Handsome and I would go I would stare at the walls, counting. He’s happy that I’ve grown out of that habit now.

Happiness is just one of the many emotions going on in the house this week. I feel extremely lucky to have not been extremely emotional throughout this whole pregnancy. I didn’t have the first trimester angry fest that some women have (cough-Jenny McCarthy-cough). Or any of the wild mood swings that typically accompany pregnancy (although I can’t say I’ve experienced this first- or second-hand from any pregnancy person I’ve known, so I’m not sure where this impression comes from).

This week I see myself starting to just barely tip over the large incline at the beginning of the emotional roller-coaster. I remember with Kiddo1 my emotions started at about the 30th week, mostly with crying at silly things like TV commercials. Long-distance commercials (sappy), diaper commercials, I don’t know, probably car commercials and Doritos ads, too. Who knows, but my reaction was mostly not justifiable.

Plus, Mr. Handsome has still been working a lot (which is supposed to let up this week) and I realize just how much I miss him when he’s gone so much. I think the week has been good for me to do a lot of the things myself that he normally does like cook dinner, wash the dishes, do the laundry, help Kiddo1 with his homework, do the grocery shopping, basically all the daily things that normal people do. Why do I not do those things more often? I have no idea.

With the good of independence comes the bad of detachment from my best friend, the person I like to regurgitate my day to and who generally makes me feel awesome and loved and all that. I do miss that and it has made me a little sad, disconnected, etc.

Other than my emotions, Kiddo1 has started asking interesting questions this week that make me feel like he’s experiencing a small bit of anxiety about his impending siblinghood. I can’t blame him: he’s lived his whole life as an only child and that is about to change. He’s asking things like, “Will you still love me when the baby comes?” and that breaks my heart a little. It’s a completely logical question for a child to ask, but it’s sad that the thought would ever enter his mind at all. I think it is difficult for a child to understand that love can grow instead of divide.

Plus Mr. Handsome and I really don’t have experiences of our own to draw from here. I was only three when my little brother arrived – I don’t remember a damn thing other than I got to get my ears pierced. Mr. Handsome is the youngest child in his family so he was born into siblinghood.

So we continue to answer Kiddo1’s question with as much love and understanding as we can, and we continue to talk him through each new thing that comes up so he is fully prepared. That’s all I think we can do but I think it helps every time we talk about it. However he still answers third party’s question of “Are you excited?” with a flat-out “NO.” Eh, what are you gonna do right?

Anyway, let’s go through the weekly wrap-up, shall we?

  • Total weight gain: still 24 pounds! No noticeable weight gain this week – the scale has held quite steady at 138 pounds. Yet Baby2 gained another quarter pound on her own. Good job baby girl!
  • Cravings: Panera’s Mac N Cheese has been calling my name all week. I have succumbed twice but I’ve limited myself to a small bowl. (With a baguette. An apple would be better, I know, but an apple isn’t quite as good as the bread dipped in the cheese. Droooool.)
  • Coolest symptom: My belly moves when she kicks sometimes. I’m waiting for people other than me to notice this.Photobucket
  • Lamest symptom: There is nothing lamer than not being able to eat. This is the second week in a row that indigestion is my lamest symptom. On the plus side: it could be a lot worse!
  • Exercise this week (the goal is 210 minutes): 225 minutes, but I’m a little disappointed at my cardio-to-yoga ratio. Only 30 minutes of yoga, so I’ve got to work on that. My ideal scenario would be alternating yoga and cardio. I did do a great job at getting exercise over the weekend, though, so, you know, baby steps. Kiddo1 and I went on a nice bike ride to dinner last Friday night and he snapped this picture of me.

Finally, let’s check in with Baby2’s progress, courtesy babycenter.com:

Your baby’s about 15.7 inches long now, and he or she weighs almost 3 pounds (like a head of cabbage). A pint and a half of amniotic fluid surrounds your little one, but that volume will decrease as your baby gets bigger and takes up more room in your uterus. Your baby’s eyesight continues to develop, though it’s not very keen. Even after birth, your baby will keep those little peepers closed for a good part of the day. He or she will respond to changes in light but will have 20/400 vision and only make out objects a few inches from his or her face. (Normal adult vision is 20/20.)

Friday Update: Week 29

I don’t know what the hell kind of object is just over 15 inches long. Google sucks at telling me this. I’ve got things that are 14 inches, 14-1/2 inches, 16 inches, but apparently only last week’s 15″ Macbook Pro is 15 inches. So I’m saving myself the heartache and forgoing an object comparison this week. Sigh.

Anyway, at just over 15 inches, Baby2 only gained a bit less than half and inch in the 29th week, but she did gain another quarter pound!

To accompany Baby2’s crazy growth, Mr. Handsome’s and my schedules have been doing some crazy growing of their own. This week has just been a major juggling act. Mr. Handsome is moving to a new restaurant (same owner/company, just better management personnel and structure) so he’s pretty much working double time because he’s awesome and won’t leave the new place without the two (or I think he gave them three?) weeks notice. He’s working every day for 16 or 17 days straight. Great money, and we could use it going into my 10-week maternity leave of which I’m only paid for six weeks. But it wreaks havoc on our schedules.

Plus this week Kiddo1 was sick again (his ear infection from last week cleared up but now he has a bad cold and swelling in the other ear) so Mr. Handsome stayed home with him Monday (he had the day shift off) and I took over at night. I stayed home with him Tuesday and Mr. Handsome took over at night so I could go to my group midwife appointment. Wednesday he got out of his night shift so I could go to water aerobics. Thursday and Friday he worked a double shift and he will work Saturday evening and Sunday brunch. This weekend we also have a soccer game for Kiddo1, I have an event to go to a big consignment sale with my Moms Group and I need to find time to get to all the projects that I’ve been woefully neglecting. Deep breath.

Speaking of scheduling, one of the things on our vast third trimester to do list is to figure out when our parents and families are coming to visit. My parents have surprisingly been very easy. They’re short on vacation time from their jobs so they’re meeting my requirement of visiting after I’ve had a couple days to recover and not staying too long (I’m going for quality not quantity!). Mr. Handsome’s parents have not been so easy because they’re retired and have all the time in the world. I love my parents and in-laws, don’t get me wrong, but I can’t handle people visiting for more than a week. I get this emotional claustrophobia and I start to become unpleasant to be around. I fear my emotions will be all screwy to begin with, what with just having pushed out a human and all. So we’ll see how that all turns out.

Here are some other events of the week:

  • Total weight gain: 24 pounds. I am still averaging a pound a week, even though there were two weeks of a half pound gain (each week) and then this last week of two pounds gained, it all evens out. I shouldn’t be surprised about the two pounds, and I really am okay with it, but I was a little sad when I stepped on the scale on Monday (I weigh myself Monday through Friday, so Monday usually brings the biggest change).
  • Cravings: Honey Nut Cheerios are the best breakfast cereal ever. Except for maybe regular Cheerios.
  • Coolest symptom: At Tuesday’s check-up it was determined that Baby2’s head is down (I think it has been for several weeks, it was down at our ultrasound), her back/bottom is on my right side with her feet on my left. This makes complete sense because I feel the strongest kicks on my left side, light ones on my lower right (those must be little arms) and an odd rotating session very low, like her head or shoulders are slowly rotating. The latter movement is the weirdest one.
  • Lamest symptom: I only have to look at food to get indigestion.
  • Exercise this week (the goal is 210 minutes): 210 exactly, and I feel like I just barely made it. I’m still not doing well at finding time to exercise on the weekends and, as you can read above, the weeks are getting busier so I’m not exercising every night either. My saviors this week were water aerobics (mandatory 60 minutes), soccer practice (another 60 minutes) and my renewed commitment to arm exercises (I did three days, 10 minutes each day). Rounding out the week was 75 minutes of yoga (two sessions of 30 and 45 minutes).

Finally, here’s a baby development update, courtesy babycenter.com:

Your baby now weighs about 2 1/2 pounds (like a butternut squash) and is a tad over 15 inches long from head to heel. Muscles and lungs are continuing to mature, and your baby’s head is growing bigger to make room for that developing brain. To meet your baby’s increasing nutritional demands, you’ll need plenty of protein, vitamin C, folic acid, and iron. And because his or her bones are soaking up lots of calcium, be sure to drink your milk (or find another good source of calcium, such as cheese, yogurt, or enriched orange juice). This trimester, about 250 milligrams of calcium are deposited in your baby’s hardening skeleton each day.

Friday Update: Week 28

PhotobucketWeek 28! Baby is almost 15 inches long! I struggled to find an object that is just shy of 15 inches this week, but I ultimately settled on the 15-inch Macbook Pro because it kept coming up in the Google search results when I asked dear Google for assistance. I don’t have this laptop to verify whether or not it is just under 15 inches, I’m still rocking a six-year-old 12″ iBook G4 (aw hells yeah). This sleek picture of the Pro makes me want a new laptop though. Must. Resist.

While baby is almost 15 inches long, week 28 is solid third trimester territory. There’s debate about when the third trimester starts, just like there is for the second. I suppose you could say it starts at 26 weeks 4 days, or 27 weeks to make it even, but I wanted to give myself until week 28 for a few reasons. One, to stretch out the “golden time” of the second trimester that much more. Two, to make the third trimester feel like it just flies by. Three, because this way today could be both a trimester milestone AND Mr. Handsome’s and my anniversary (post coming about that tomorrow).

As you may know, the third trimester, when compared to the second, is not all non-alcoholic wine and roses. There are some things the third trimester is notorious for, and I somewhat fear (although fear may be too strong of a word):

  • More indigestion, which coincidentally has been occurring more frequently this week.
  • More farting (I had it BAD in third tri with Kiddo1. Although this time I’ve figured out that chocolate/sugar really triggers my gas, so I’m closer to being able to control it). I am silent but deadly.
  • More exhaustion. I don’t think I was all that tired in the first tri but I do remember taking lunchtime naps with Kiddo1 when I was in the third tri last time – yes I was that tired.
  • More Braxton Hicks, which I don’t remember having very many of at all with Kiddo1 but now I already have them ALL THE TIME.
  • More nighttime potty breaks (why does this have to correlate with the sleepy times of the first and third trimester?!).
  • More biggering. Most people say the last couple months is when their weight gain got out of control. My control has been great so far, if I do say so myself, so hopefully that will continue.

There are good things though, right?

  • Awesome kicks that make it seem like baby is trying to escape. Kiddo1 liked to stick out an elbow or knee sometimes and I would gently push him back. That sort of interaction is pretty cool.
  • Finishing projects! The feeling of everything coming together!
  • Finalizing names. I think we’ve agreed on a middle name already!
  • Everything starting to feel more real. So we’re really having another kid, eh? No turning back now!
  • Viability, just in case someone decides to join us really early (not too early please!).
  • Being that much closer to a precious cold beer baby snuggle. (Who am I kidding, the beer takes a close second sometimes!)

Here are some more pros and cons, but about the past (this week) rather then the future:

  • Total weight gain: The scale has said it’s been a solid 22 pounds for the past couple days. I can’t begin to say how happy I am with the scale. That means I only gained half a pound each week for the last two weeks – baby put on a half pound herself in that same amount of time!
  • Cravings: Honestly, I don’t really have much in the way of cravings. I have something each week that I seem to like a little more than other things, but I don’t particularly crave anything. That seems to be people’s favorite question to ask lately, though, “What weird foods are you eating?!?!?!” Ugh, I don’t eat weird foods. The strangest thing I’ve eaten through this whole pregnancy is a hamburger (I don’t usually eat ground beef). Vent over.
  • Coolest symptom: Overall, I just feel good. Sure there’s indigestion and I’m a bit more tired but growing a person is pretty dang cool. I like being pregnant. Despite what some of my “lame symptom” updates might say! There’s just a special feeling I have when I’m pregnant, I can’t describe it. Like glowing from within or something. I like it. It almost makes me not miss beer!
  • Lamest symptom: How is it possible to feel full and hungry at the same time? I can be completely stuffed but I want to put food in my mouth. What is that all about? And I don’t know if I’ve posted about it before, but sometimes I think I can feel myself getting bigger – my belly expanding, skin stretching. I don’t know if it is in my head or not but the fact is that I AM getting bigger so it wouldn’t be that weird if I could feel it, right?
  • Exercise this week (the goal is 210 minutes): It was a very cardio-filled week! We rode our bikes to one of Kiddo1’s soccer games (yep, still on my bike with a seven-month belly! Kind of weird but awesome!) and I went to water aerobics again and had an extra evening of swimming with Kiddo1 (he and Mr. Handsome couldn’t come with on my usually water aerobics night because he had cavities filled a couple hours before). I did some elliptical and a whole lot of active soccer practice for 235 minutes of total exercise this week! I only fit in 15 minutes of light yoga, which has been a bit more difficult lately. I hope to post a yoga update soon…

By this week, your baby weighs 2 1/4 pounds (like a Chinese cabbage) and measures 14.8 inches from the top of the head to the heels. Your baby can blink his or her eyes, which now sport lashes. With increasingly developed eyesight, your baby may be able to see the light that filters in through your womb. Your baby’s also developing billions of neurons in his or her brain and adding more body fat in preparation for life in the outside world.

Friday Update: Week 27

PhotobucketHappy Friday the 13th! It’s the second of three Friday the 13ths this year, the last one being Baby2’s due date. I feel like we’re quickly getting so much closer to it!

Baby is about 14-1/2 inches long this week – the height of my KitchenAid mixer! I love my mixer, even though I don’t use it often enough. Mine was a gift from Mr. Handsome about three years ago, I think for Christmas! I have made some yummy comfort foods with it, if I do say so myself.

This week my poor family could use some comfort – everyone except me has been sick, and that includes our dog!

Last week, Kiddo1 woke up complaining that he couldn’t hear out of one ear. I kind of assumed he slept on it wrong (is that an odd assumption?) so that he was exaggerating a bit… lately it seems like something is always hurting him. But the loss of hearing persisted so I took the day off last Thursday and took him to the doctor’s office.

Turns out, he had his second-ever case of Swimmer’s Ear (you can get it even if you haven’t been swimming!) so we got hooked up with some drops. He has to have drops in his ear four times a day for five days. We wrapped up the drop routine on Tuesday and he reports hearing and comfort restored. Hopefully everything will check out when we go back to the doctor on Monday afternoon.

Meanwhile, Mr. Handsome has had a bit of a cold with a whole lot of cough. Let’s just say neither one of us slept very well earlier this week! It seems like Mr. Handsome has been fighting back colds for the last couple weeks. I feel bad for him but very lucky for myself since I haven’t picked anything up!

Finally, our pup, Max, has been sick too. Last week he stopped eating; he hardly ate anything at all for a few days. So I took him to the vet on Friday, the day after Kiddo1’s doctor visit. Ah, the vet’s office: Max hates it because they poke at him and I hate it because they take all our money! He was a bit dehydrated but otherwise nothing seemed wrong so they wanted to take X-rays. They were very concerned about him not eating. They also pumped him full of some electrolytes and fluids to get him re-hydrated. $600 later the diagnosis was Gastro-something-or-other and he was on a special diet for a few days.

He’s still not feeling 100% better, but at least his appetite has improved. We go back to the vet on Monday, too, so hopefully they’ll have more to tell us about what they think the problem is.

All through this I’ve felt pretty good, no sickness at least, but I had another round of crazy Braxton Hicks on Monday night. I ate a big dinner – I’m thinking the resulting indigestion probably brought them on. I wouldn’t call them painful, really, but the longer they lasted the more annoying they became, for sure. They started around seven. I started to drift in and out of sleep for awhile around then. I woke up on the couch at one and felt much better, so I guess I just had to wait it out. I drank a lot of water and, ahem, my dinner was digested and purged, so I hope that helped.

As annoying as the Braxton Hicks are, I kind of like the practice they offer me. I am super psyched about going for a drug-free labor and delivery, but there’s always that thought in the back of my mind that I won’t be able to do it. I suppose these contractions help me to practice some breathing and talking myself through. They aren’t all bad… I guess.

Other things about this week weren’t all bad either:

  • Total weight gain: I’m calling it 21-1/2 pounds because I don’t think 21 or 22 pounds is entirely fair. A whopping two pounds of that is all baby!
  • Cravings: Asparagus looks very yummy this week, perhaps because I’ve been seeing it front-and-center at all the food stores. It must be in season! I feel like my diet has been pretty good the last couple weeks. I’ve stayed away from ice cream and have made an effort (albeit a small one) to limit my carb intake.
  • Coolest symptom: Bump compliments are nice. I’ve never received so many “you’re so cute” comments in one week from random people before! Everyone I meet has been so sweet – and this whole time I was worried about unsolicited advice! I have such little faith in people…
  • Lamest symptom: The aforementioned Braxton Hicks were a bit lame. There are pros and cons, as noted.
  • Exercise this week (the goal is 210 minutes): I just barely made it this week – 210 exactly! I’m proud of myself because this week was crazy, what with the sicknesses and KIddo1 started soccer and a dance class this week, so I didn’t have a lot of free weekends. Also, I started water aerobics this week! I hope to write more about it in a few days, or maybe after I’ve had another couple of classes.
